Canadians Say…”It’s too cold to vote!”

Despite what seems to be an overwhelming sense that Canadians didn’t want a holiday election campaign, Opposition Leader Stephen Harper introduced and won a non-confidence motion toppling the Liberal minority government and forcing a federal election scheduled for mid-January, 2006.
That should win over some votes Mr. Harper…that, and more photo opportunities like this one. I mean really, is this the man you want as the leader of your country?

“Decima Research found that support for the Liberal party rises in a January or February election scenario. The Liberals would have 34 per cent support, the Conservatives would be unchanged at 26 per cent, and the New Democrats would slip two percentage points to 20 per cent.
The poll also found that Conservative voters are most likely to brave a chilly winter day to head to the ballot box. They are just as likely to turn out to vote in January as in April.
But, three per cent of Liberal and NDP voters would be likely to stay home during an early election, and five per cent of Bloc Quebecois supporters wouldn’t get out to vote.”

Huh? Where do they get these numbers and who thinks to ask these questions? This just goes to show you that Conservatives are a hell of a lot tougher than those nancies in the liberal and Bloc parties since they’re more willing to go out and vote in the cold (and wear cowboy outfits like that), yet the Liberals would still have the edge in the polls…So far so good for Harper…
Liberals Risk Big in a Winter Election

“Prime Minister Paul Martin faces considerable risks with an election strategy that entails blaming opposition parties for an unpopular Christmas campaign and luring voters with billions of dollars in tax cuts, a new poll has found.

While the Liberals are ahead of their rivals in public popularity, there are signs many voters don’t believe Mr. Martin has learned the lessons of the sponsorship scandal and they are willing to give Stephen Harper’s Conservatives a chance to govern.”

“Lessons? What lessons? What scandal? Martin didn’t know anything about a scandal.” said the unnamed Liberal PR guy on the 9th green of some golf course in Quebec, just before putting his Chrétien-monogrammed golf ball in for par.
I think the Liberals have learned their lesson, and next time they embezzle hundreds of millions of tax dollars, they’ll be sure to have doctored receipts for every penny.
Layton is Just Happy to be in the Race

NDP leader Jack Layton was quoted as saying he is just happy to be involved in 2006 federal election campaign, even if he does have little effect on it and no one actually cares about his party. He’s just hoping that some of the voters who are falling off the shrinking Liberal band-wagon, will be momentarily confused and vote for his little toy party.
His best friend in these elections must be Stephen Harper since the NDP help splinter the bleeding-heart left-wing vote from the Liberals. You can say that Layton is Harper’s tonto…except without the feathers…or any other aboriginal stereotype. I wonder if Harper makes Layton dress up like him when no one is watching.*
Bloc Leader has a Twin!

It was a bitter-sweet reunion yesterday when Bloc Québécois leader Gilles Duceppe was reunited with his long-estranged twin brother François on the popular French-speaking Quebec talk-show Gerard Springiér.
The two were brought together for the first time in 25 years on-stage in front of the live studio audience. Tears flowed as they embraced. François (Frankie, pictured here) an anglophone from Toronto cited their political differences as the main reason for the two brothers’ estrangement.

When asked if he could reconcile with his brother, the Separatist leader clucked and called his brother an English muffin stating that he can take his Anglo-oppressive nationalist derrière back to that diversity-polluted cess-pool home of his. Political experts say that while the reunion showed a softer side to the politician, it didn’t win him any favour with English-speaking Canada.**
* None of this is true I made it all up
** As far as I know, none of this is true (except for the part where Duceppe looks like a ferret).
