Pixel Envy III: Tew’s Conquest

Well…he finally did it…Alex Tew has finally reached his goal of selling one million pixels for a-dollar-a-piece.

As of December 31st, 2005, 999,000 pixels had been sold. The very next day, the final 1,000 pixels went up for auction on eBay – as if this kid needed to provide us with any more proof of his creative genius.

As I type, the high bid for the remaining 1,000 pixels is $21,500. That’s a 2150% markup on what he sold the previous 999,000 pixels for.

Let me sum it up this way – making you feel even smaller…Basically Alex managed to take a theoretical dot of nothing and sell it for $1. Then he created such a demand for that dot of nothing that the value of nothing has now blown up to $21.50/dot. My guess is, that by the time the auction ends on January 8th, nothing will go for a lot more than most things.

Now comes a new lesson for Alex…fame hangover. Since this kid seems to have peaked at the tender age of 21, he will have to learn to deal with the fact that, while he may come up with new, better ideas, nothing will come remotely close to the hype and success of The Million Dollar Home Page. Once he is able to grasp that reality, he’ll be able to enjoy his new-found wealth and success.

Way to go Alex, I didn’t think you’d do it and I’m glad you did!
