To Make a Long Story Short…

Have you ever noticed that when someone says, “To make a long story short…” the story doesn’t actually get shorter, but it does—in fact—become longer? By at least 6 words—but often more.

So, to make a long story short, I hate it when people say, “to make a long story short…” I wish they would just cut to the chase.

Which reminds me…

Have you ever noticed that when someone says, “I’ll cut to the chase…” often, the speaker of this idiom does quite the opposite?

So, in a nutshell…

That reminds me…

Have you ever noticed that when someone says, “In a nutshell…” there is rarely a nutshell involved, and what they ultimately say, rarely would fit in a nutshell if there were a nutshell to try to fit it into?

There you have it…to make a long story short, I have cut to the chase and put my thoughts in a nutshell so as to give you the gist, the long and short of it, the abridged version, just the facts ma’am, the Coles notes version of one of my pet peeves.

  1. In summation Al, that cracked me up!

  2. Glad you liked it Phil. 😉

  3. Allan, let me “take a minute of your time” to say……. very funny, and oh so true!

  4. Next up…people who say “anyways”, instead of “anyway”…spellchecks that insist on spelling internet with a capital I…people who add an apostrophe “s” to the end of an acronym to pluralize it. It’s CDs, not CD’s!

What are you thinking?
