Superman (2025)

A little while back, in anticipation of the new Superman movie, I wrote about all the past Supermen and did a little bit of comparing and contrasting.

Well, yesterday I finally got out to watch the new Superman movie. I even went to watch it in a theatre! That’s the first time I’ve gone to watch a movie in a theatre—that wasn’t animated for my kids—in a very long time!

It was…alright.

Pros:

A scene featuring the new Superman character, portrayed in a blue and red suit with a prominent 'S' emblem, standing in a well-lit interior setting.

I liked Corenswet as both Clark and Superman. He provided an equal amount of charm and goofiness for both. If I had any criticism, it might be that he wasn’t a very imposing figure as Superman, but compared to Cavill, that was probably always going to be the case.

I LOVED Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane! Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was born for the part!

Ever since I saw him in The Great, I’ve been a fan of everything Nicholas Hoult has been in. This is no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed him as Lex Luther.

A close-up of a young bald man with blue eyes, wearing a dark coat, set against a backdrop of blue ice crystals.

I really enjoyed the tone set by James Gunn. The colour, the humour, it was everything I loved about the original Superman movie. The dog was fun too. I liked what they tried to do with the Justice Gang League, although I thought Hawkgirl was the weakest of the heroes. I LOVED the appearance of the Hall of Justice!

Cons:

I found the action to be boring. Too much CGI. Perhaps I’ve reached superhero fatigue. I hated what they did with Ma and Pa Kent. Too dumb/hick for my liking.

Overall, it was a solid film, but I was hoping for more.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
