NHL Free Agency

So the Leafs spent a whole lot of money on defense—which is good—and they got themselves a first-string goalie at a reasonable price—which is also good—they also let their aging goalie go and bought out Domi’s contract—good and good.

Berg is gone, Lindros is waiting for a phone call, Roberts wants back and Antropov seems to be refusing a two-way contract—I don’t know what he thinks he did to deserve any more. Some of the kids showed promise last season, but the Leafs need more youth and speed in this new NHL.

But the biggest hole remains to be filled… and that hole is to the right—or left—of Mats Sundin.

In an off-season that has seen a staggering number of free agents become available, Toronto has yet to spend a dime of that available money under the cap on a quality forward to help our captain. This may end up being Mats’ last year in Toronto, unless he resigns for a whole lot less money to stay on a team that won’t have a chance at the Cup for years and years to come. Look for a big deal involving Mats before next year’s trade deadline if the Leafs don’t look like they’re going to make the playoffs.

It will be a sad day for many. Mats served his team with loyalty and integrity, they owe it to him to make sure he ends up on a contender for what will likely be the last contract of his career.
