Pulse24.com ran a story this past Saturday speculating on why the world’s perception of Canada may have taken a turn for the worse, sparking recent terrorist threats and arrests.
Friday’s arrests of 17 terror suspects may have marked the end of Canada’s innocence.
At one time Canadians may have felt immune to the threat of terrorist attacks, but experts believe some of the federal government’s recent policies, including sending troops to Afghanistan, have put Canada on terror target lists.
I hate to say I told you so—and I probably didn’t tell you specifically so—but I knew that as soon as we took a more offensive stance in Afghanistan, this was going to happen. I’m not going to condone the Liberal’s election tactics, but I will say this; when they warned of hidden agendas, they may have been fear-mongering but as we get deeper and deeper into this administration we’re beginning to see signs that they may have been right.
Already we’ve seen more money going to defence—which I’m all for, if it means saving soldier’s lives, but don’t fool yourself, we’ll be using it to join Georgie’s boys in Iraq soon enough; we’ve seen us take a more offensive role in Afghanistan, rather than our more recent traditional role of peace-keeping; we’ve seen our government close its doors to the media to control the news—so much for a clear and transparent government; and we’ve seen attempts by our government to marginalize the casualties of war—a la George Bush.
“Canadians have to realize that they’re now in the big league and on the firing line,” Eric Margolis, an expert on foreign affairs and contributing foreign editor for Sun Media, told CP24.
There’s growing concern in the public. I hear it all the time, about the foreign policy of Canada. What are we doing in Afghanistan? If the war gets worse in Afghanistan, do we find ourselves in the same spot as the United States?
Oh god! Perish the thought!
Margolis, who’s currently working in Paris, said many people around the world believe nothing bad happens in Canada, but he said the country now has to come face-to-face with some terrible issues.
Careful, this is beginning to sound a little like fear-mongering…
While Friday’s arrests were a serious wake-up call for many Canadians, Margolis said there’s no reason to become panicked.
Whew! I’m glad we didn’t go down that scary road…
“One mustn’t go into a tizzy or tailspin over the threat of terrorism. Remember, auto accidents kill hundreds of times more people every year than terrorism…
Right…auto accidents are bigger killers! Let’s start a war against autos! Who’s with me? Can I get a lift?
The fact that police were able to stop the suspects before they carried out their alleged plot may have eased many minds, but Thompson said that’s no reason to be complacent.
God bless the RCMP, they always get their man! Go Mounties!
“They’ll keep trying,” he said. “Terrorism is very rarely stopped as a result of arrests and the action of the courts.”
Wait a minute…I thought there was no reason to become panicked! I think my blood pressure just went though the roof…I feel like a Big Mac…I should go and buy a gun to protect myself and my family…oh, and I think I’ll start going to church again—every day—and I’m not sure I trust my neighbour anymore, he looks different, he could be one of them…I could be wrong, but I’m not going to risk it…maybe I should give my government permission to eaves-drop on my phone calls and email, that way, they can find these bastards…or at least give them permission to arrest me if they suspect I’m a terrorist..after all, when I’m tanned in the summer, I could pass for one…it’s a small price to pay for freedom.
Thank god for Harper and the Conservatives! I feel safer already in my new bomb shelter stocked with canned goods and a generator in case of terrorist attack, or maybe a global warming-related natural disaster.
THANK YOU STEPHEN!
