A Night at the Cirque

Last night Tanya and I went down to the Air Canada Center to catch the latest Cirque du Soleil (CDS) show called Delirium. It was the final part of Tanya’s 30th birthday gift—which also included an evening at 1 King West, dinner and some live Jazz at The Rex (They had a great Octet playing that night), and tickets to a Jon Stewart show which we attended a couple of weeks ago.

This was the second CDS show we’ve seen. The first was their show O in Las Vegas. O, blew me away and was literally the best show I’d ever seen. I highly recommend it if you’re going to Vegas and you can only afford to pay $200 US/ticket for one show.

Delirium was okay, it was nowhere near as good as O—then again, I can’t imagine many shows that would be. It was light on the circus element and heavy on the sensory experience. There was a lot of dancing, live music, stunning visual effects and a storyline to boot.

The score featured music from CDS’s various shows, including O and Alegria. It was more like a concert with a bunch of shit going on all around the stage.

The story was pretty high concept, and if I hadn’t bought Tanya a program and read it today whilst sitting on the crapper, I wouldn’t have gleaned any semblance of meaning from the actual show, I would have just said that it was pretty.

Overall, it was a good—albeit expensive—evening. Tanya took it all in and loved every second of it. The CDS experience is something very unique and I’d highly recommend it to anyone, I only wish they didn’t make it such a pricey ticket.
